Emergencies
While there are very few orthodontic emergencies, we want to provide you with information on how orthodontic emergencies and repairs are handled. Emergencies fall into two categories: injuries directly to the mouth and/or teeth and emergencies that effect orthodontic appliances.
Injuries directly to the mouth and/or teeth
Whether you are undergoing orthodontic care or not, and you experience an injury directly to your mouth and/or teeth, you should be seen by your family dentist. We can help you find the care you need for the injury.
Emergencies that affect orthodontic appliances
It is possible that you will have a broken or loose appliance during your orthodontic care. You should call us as soon as possible if you notice loose bands or broken or poking wires. This enables us to determine the severity of the problem and schedule an appointment to address the problem. If assistance is needed after hours, please call our office and our answering service will inform you of what to do. Meanwhile, here are some helpful home-remedies that can help solve some of the problems you may encounter:
- If you have a wire irritating you, cover the wire with wax or use a blunt object such as a pencil eraser or Q-tip to tuck it under.
- If you have a loose-fitting removable appliance, do not wear it until it can be properly adjusted in our office. Call our office to schedule an appointment as soon as possible to have the appliance adjusted.
