Parts of Braces
Appliance
Anything attached to your teeth by an orthodontist that helps move your teeth or change the shape of your jaw.
Archwire
A wire engaged in the braces, capable of causing or guiding tooth movement.
Band
A thin metal ring, usually stainless steel, which serves to secure orthodontic attachments or braces to a tooth.
Bracket
An orthodontic attachment that is secured to a tooth for the purpose of engaging an archwire.
Chain
A stretchable elastic chain used to close the spaces between teeth.
Mouthguard
A plastic device used to protect your mouth from injury while playing contact sports. All patients in braces should wear a mouthguard to prevent injuries. Our office will provide you with a mouthguard at your request.
Palatal expander
A device used to widen the upper jaw.
Retainer
Any orthodontic appliance, fixed or removable, used to maintain the position of the teeth following corrective treatment.
Separator
A small rubber doughnut placed in between two teeth to create room for bands.
Wax
Wax is used to prevent the braces/wires from irritating your lips.
